'how much' or 'how well'?

a colleague in the NGO that i work raised an interesting topic - faced with a challenge to design science syllabi for high school students, she asks 'what do 14-16 year olds ought to know?'

at the outset, she says, everyone ought to know about nutrition and reproduction (she points out that not many would be continuing with science post std-10).

but th question leaves me thinking - is it all about just feeding them all that they 'ought to know'...? In this changing world, doesn't the term 'ought to know' die way too quickly for the issues we deem absolutely crucial at present...

more on this as i subconsciously re-gurgitate on the topic....

probably not how much... students forget enough as it is... how well the know how to learn what you tell them, so if they are interested in something they might want to get more information, they will know how to find and understand it... if that makes any grammatical sense, with not fullstops or anything...
